Canine Influenza, also known as the dog flu, is a highly contagious respiratory infection that is caused by a virus. The virus causes high fever, lethargy, decreased appetite, coughing, sneezing, and nasal discharge. The virus comes in two forms, a mild one and a more severe form that is accompanied by pneumonia.
Thirty states around the country have reported cases of canine influenza. The virus is spread through direct contact with respiratory secretions from a shedding infected dog or contact with contaminated objects like toys, crates, food, and water dishes. Researchers say 80% of exposed dogs will get sick from the virus and 5% of dogs die from complications of the virus. Canine flu is seen more in dogs that board, go to groomers, dog parks or have been in a shelter environment.
At Ann Road Animal Hospital, we advise that if your pet's lifestyle brings them into any of these environments you call or come in to discuss this disease. Our staff will offer information on starting a vaccination protocol that can help protect your pet. Vaccines are usually the best way to prevent viruses, but good animal care practices and nutrition also assist dogs in mounting an effective immune response.
